Jira has become the backbone of modern team collaboration, helping organizations plan projects, manage workflows, and deliver value faster. But as businesses grow, their processes become more unique, complex, and demanding. The question is no longer just, “How can Jira help us manage work?” It becomes, “How can Jira adapt to the way our business works?”
This is where ScriptFabric for Jira comes in, extending Jira beyond its standard capabilities and transforming it into a highly customizable and automated platform.

What is ScriptFabric?
ScriptFabric is a Jira app developed by Canarys Automations Limited that extends Jira’s native capabilities through automation, scripting, and workflow customization. It enables Jira administrators and teams to automate repetitive tasks, implement complex business logic, and customize workflows using JavaScript / TypeScript.
Prerequisites Before Using ScriptFabric for Jira
Before using ScriptFabric for Jira, ensure you have:
- Jira Administrator Access – Required for installation, configuration, and managing ScriptFabric features.
- Basic Jira Knowledge – Understanding of workflows, issues, fields, permissions, and screens.
- Basic JavaScript / TypeScript Knowledge (Recommended) – Helps in creating and maintaining custom scripts.
Why Do Jira Teams Use ScriptFabric?
Many organizations begin by using the built-in capabilities provided by Jira to manage their projects and workflows. As projects grow and business processes become more complex, teams may encounter challenges that require additional flexibility beyond standard Jira configurations.
Here are some common ways ScriptFabric helps:
1. Automate Everyday Jira Tasks
Many Jira administrators spend time performing repetitive activities, such as updating fields, assigning issues, or managing transitions.
With ScriptFabric automation, you can:
- Automatically update issue fields based on conditions
- Assign issues to the right users or teams
- Perform actions when issues are created or updated
- Schedule recurring maintenance tasks
Example:
When a bug is moved to “Done,” ScriptFabric can automatically update related fields, add comments, or notify stakeholders.
2. Build Smarter Workflows
Jira workflows define how work moves from one status to another. ScriptFabric helps create advanced workflow rules using:
- Conditions – Control who can perform a transition
- Validators – Ensure required information is provided before moving an issue
- Post-functions – Perform automatic actions after a transition
Example:
A team can prevent an issue from moving to “Ready for Release” unless testing details and approval information are completed.
3. Create Dynamic Jira Forms with Field Behaviours
Sometimes users need different fields based on their selections. ScriptFabric Behaviours make Jira screens more intelligent.
You can:
- Show or hide fields dynamically
- Make fields mandatory based on conditions
- Set default values automatically
Example:
If a user selects “Production Issue,” additional fields like impact level and affected service can automatically appear.
4. Manage Jira Events with Event Handlers
Event Handlers allow ScriptFabric to respond automatically when Jira events occur.
Common examples include:
- Sending notifications when important changes happen
- Updating related issues
- Creating follow-up tasks automatically
This helps teams maintain consistency and reduce manual updates.
5. Perform bulk operations using Quick Actions
With Quick Actions, teams can:
- Bulk Clone Issues – Clone multiple issues based on JQL criteria.
- Bulk Fix Resolutions – Correct resolution values across multiple issues.
- Copy Custom Field Values – Transfer field data between issues.
- Bulk Transition Issues – Move multiple issues through workflows.
- Bulk Delete Issues – Remove issues matching specific criteria when required.
