In the previous blog, we explored the different editions of Confluence Cloud and their core capabilities. In this blog, let us look at the AI features, security, governance and integration with Jira.

AI Features in Confluence Cloud

Atlassian’s AI strategy in Confluence is anchored by two core systems: Atlassian Intelligence — the foundational AI layer built in collaboration with OpenAI — and Rovo, the more expansive AI platform that delivers search, conversational chat, autonomous agents, and content transformation capabilities across the entire Atlassian ecosystem.

As of 2025, Rovo is included at no additional upfront cost in all paid Confluence Cloud plans. Premium and Enterprise users gained access from April 2025, and Standard users from October 2025. AI is not available on the Free plan.

1. Atlassian Intelligence — The AI Foundation

Atlassian Intelligence is the baseline AI layer embedded into Confluence Cloud. Enabled by default for Premium and Enterprise users, it powers in-editor AI assistance and connects to Atlassian’s Teamwork Graph — a proprietary data intelligence layer that maps relationships between your projects, pages, people, and work items.

AI Writing Assistant
  • Generate a first draft from a short prompt — turn a brief description into a full-length meeting agenda, project plan, or specification page.
  • Rewrite and rephrase selected text to improve clarity, change tone (professional, casual, concise), or fix grammatical errors.
  • Summarize long pages into concise bullets or paragraphs — ideal for status updates and executive briefings.
  • Translate content into multiple languages to support global teams.
  • Complete partially written sentences and continue writing in context.
  • Polish prose by fixing spelling, grammar, and punctuation issues automatically.
Smart Page Summaries
  • Generate an AI-powered summary at the top of any Confluence page to give readers instant context before diving into the full content.
  • Summaries update as page content changes, keeping them accurate over time.
  • Useful for onboarding new team members who need to quickly understand project context.
AI-Powered Templates
  • Ask AI to generate a custom template tailored to a specific use case, saving time for recurring document types.
  • Smart suggestions inside the editor propose relevant templates based on the type of content you are creating.
2. Rovo — Atlassian’s Full AI Platform

Rovo is Atlassian’s flagship AI product, and it represents a significant leap beyond basic writing assistance. Rovo connects knowledge across Confluence, Jira, Jira Service Management, Slack, Google Drive, and hundreds of third-party enterprise apps — bringing everything together into a single intelligent layer. It is built on three pillars: Find, Learn, and Act.

Rovo Search — Find Anything, Everywhere

Rovo Search is a unified AI-powered search engine that queries across your entire toolstack simultaneously, without the need to switch between apps.

  • Natural language queries — ask questions in plain English like “Who owns the APAC go-to-market strategy?” and receive precise, contextual answers drawn from across your connected tools.
  • Cross-product search — results from Confluence pages, Jira issues, Jira Service Management tickets, Google Drive files, Slack messages, and more, all in one interface.
  • Permission-aware results — Rovo strictly respects your existing access controls, so users only see content they are already authorized to view.
  • Related content surfacing — automatically surfaces related Jira issues, Confluence pages, and tickets alongside your primary result, reducing manual cross-referencing.
  • Knowledge cards — quick contextual cards that explain company terms, acronyms, projects, or people directly in context.
Rovo Chat — Your AI Teammate

Rovo Chat is an interactive conversational AI assistant embedded directly in Confluence, Jira, Jira Service Management, and Jira Product Discovery, as well as accessible via a browser extension so you can use it anywhere you work.

  • Ask questions in natural language and receive AI-generated answers drawing from all connected sources — Confluence pages, Jira issues, past meeting notes, and third-party apps.
  • Generate new ideas, draft content, iterate on documents, and get feedback without leaving the current page.
  • Take actions across tools — Rovo Chat can create Jira issues, generate Google Docs, send Slack messages, and create calendar events based on a single conversational command.
  • Catch up on missed work — ask Rovo Chat to summarize what happened in a project, a sprint, or a space during your absence.
  • Inline definitions — hover over unfamiliar company jargon, acronym, or project name and Rovo instantly explains it in context without disrupting your flow.
  • Browser extension access — use Rovo Chat while on external websites, in your email, or within third-party SaaS tools through the browser extension.
Rovo Agents — Autonomous AI Teammates

Rovo Agents are Atlassian’s most advanced AI capability — autonomous virtual teammates that can plan, reason, and execute multi-step tasks on your behalf. Unlike simple chatbots, agents can take real actions within your Atlassian ecosystem and connected tools.

  • Brainstorm Facilitator Agent — takes a brainstorming session to the next level, generating diverse ideas, organizing them by theme, and converting them into actionable Jira issues with a single command.
  • Onboarding Agent — helps new team members get up to speed by answering questions about processes, tools, and team norms based on institutional knowledge stored in Confluence.
  • Documentation Agent — reviews existing Confluence pages for staleness, proposes updates, and can automatically rewrite outdated content (with your approval).
  • Jira Backlog Cleaner Agent — analyzes your Jira backlog, identifies duplicates, outdated tickets, and tickets lacking sufficient detail, and suggests or performs clean-up actions.
  • Custom agents via Rovo Studio — teams can build their own bespoke agents tailored to specific workflows, with unique knowledge sources and custom action capabilities.
  • Partner agents — Atlassian has launched partner agents for Lovable, Replit, and Gamma: a Confluence page can be sent directly to these tools to generate a working web application, a development starter project, or a polished presentation with zero copy-pasting.
Rovo Agents: Privacy and Security All Rovo Agents operate within Atlassian’s existing permission model. An agent can only access and act on content that the triggering user already has permission to see. Rovo holds SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certifications, and Atlassian enforces zero data retention with LLM providers — meaning content shared with AI models is not stored or used for model training.
3. Remix with Rovo — Transform Text into Visuals

Launched in open beta in early 2026, Remix is one of Confluence’s most exciting recent AI capabilities. It addresses a well-documented reality: Confluence pages that include visual elements are read 18% more often by a wider audience.

  • Instant conversion — select any section of a Confluence page (data table, process description, lengthy analysis) and Remix converts it into a chart, infographic, timeline, or presentation-ready visual.
  • Non-destructive — the original page content remains intact as the authoritative canonical version; the generated visual is an additional representation, not a replacement.
  • Multiple output formats — users choose from preset visual types or type a custom description of what they want.
  • Inline display — the generated visual appears directly on the Confluence page, not in a separate external tool.
  • Available to all Confluence Cloud customers with Rovo.
4. AI-Powered Search in Confluence
  • Smart search results — the Confluence search engine uses AI to rank results by contextual relevance, not just keyword matching.
  • Natural language queries directly in the Confluence search bar without needing to open Rovo Chat.
  • Confidential content protection — content that a user does not have permission to view remains inaccessible, even in AI-generated summaries and search results.
  • Space and page-level AI summaries in search results, allowing users to preview page relevance before clicking through.
5. AI in Confluence Automation

Automation in Confluence allows users to create rule-based workflows triggered by events such as page creation, page updates, or Jira issue transitions. Premium and Enterprise users can now build automation rules using plain English rather than manually configuring triggers and actions.

  • Natural language rule creation — describe what you want the automation to do and Atlassian Intelligence interprets it and builds the rule.
  • Cross-product automation — trigger Confluence actions based on Jira events and vice versa.
  • New trigger: “Issue created in Jira” — a 2025 addition allowing Confluence automation to fire when new Jira issues are created in a specified project.
  • AI-assisted description improvement — paste a Confluence link into a Jira work item description field and use AI to generate an improved, contextual description automatically.
The Power of Confluence + Jira Integration

One of Confluence Cloud’s most compelling strengths is its deep, native integration with Jira. Available across all plans, this integration transforms documentation from a passive archive into an active participant in your project workflows.

  • Embed live Jira issue lists, boards, and sprint summaries directly inside Confluence pages using the Jira Issues macro — no manual updates required.
  • Link Confluence pages to Jira epics, stories, and tickets to connect planning documentation with execution.
  • Take bulk actions on Jira work items directly from Confluence whiteboards without switching apps.
  • Use Rovo to query across both Confluence and Jira simultaneously — ask “What work is blocked in the Q3 release?” and get answers spanning both platforms.
  • Generate sprint review pages, retrospective documents, and release notes automatically using Confluence automation triggered by Jira sprint events.

According to Atlassian, 76% of customers who use Confluence alongside Jira report shipping projects faster than teams using standalone documentation or project management tools.

Security, Compliance, and Data Governance

For enterprise buyers, Confluence Cloud’s security posture is a critical evaluation criterion. Atlassian has invested significantly in compliance certifications and data governance features, particularly for Premium and Enterprise customers.

Platform-Level Security (All Plans)
  • HTTPS encryption in transit; AES-256 encryption at rest.
  • SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certifications for the Atlassian Cloud platform.
  • Regular third-party penetration testing and vulnerability disclosure program.
Premium and Enterprise Additions
  • Data residency — control which AWS region (US, EU, Australia, Germany) hosts your Confluence data.
  • IP allowlisting — restrict access to known corporate network ranges.
  • Atlassian Guard Standard (Enterprise, included; Premium, add-on) — SSO via SAML 2.0/OIDC, SCIM automated provisioning, Active Directory sync, and enhanced audit logging.
  • Rovo’s AI layer is SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certified, with zero-day retention of data sent to LLM providers.
Migration from Server / Data Center to Confluence Cloud

Atlassian officially ended Server product support in early 2025, making Cloud migration an urgent priority for many organizations. If you are currently running Confluence Data Center — or advising customers who are — here are the key migration considerations:

  • Cloud Migration Trial — Atlassian provides a migration trial period equal to the remainder of your existing license, up to 12 months, allowing you to run parallel environments.
  • Migration Assistant — Atlassian’s built-in Cloud Migration Assistant automates the migration of spaces, pages, attachments, user permissions, and macros.
  • App compatibility — not all Confluence Server/Data Center marketplace apps have Cloud equivalents. A compatibility audit should be performed before migrating.
  • Large instance migrations — databases over 30 GB (including attachments) require additional planning around migration speed, network bandwidth, and staging.
  • Post-migration validation — validate permissions, page hierarchy, macro rendering, user accounts, and automation rules after migration before decommissioning Data Center.

Conclusion

Confluence Cloud has come a long way from its origins as an enterprise wiki. Today, it is a comprehensive team workspace that spans knowledge management, real-time collaboration, visual brainstorming, workflow automation, and AI-powered intelligence — all delivered as a cloud service with no infrastructure overhead.

The four editions — Free, Standard, Premium, and Enterprise — form a well-considered progression from lightweight team collaboration to enterprise-scale operations. The introduction of Rovo has arguably been the most significant product evolution in Confluence’s history, bringing conversational AI, cross-platform search, autonomous agents, and visual content transformation into a single coherent platform.

For most growing organizations, the Premium plan represents the sweet spot: full AI access, unlimited storage, strong uptime guarantees, and the administrative controls needed to manage a large team safely. Enterprises with compliance mandates, multiple brands, or global distributed teams should evaluate the Enterprise plan — particularly given that Atlassian Guard Standard (SSO, SCIM, Active Directory sync) is bundled at no additional cost.

Whether you are just getting started with Confluence or planning a migration from Data Center, the AI-powered future of team knowledge management is already here — and Confluence Cloud is leading the way.
